Almost Grown
The following portraits are of people who describe themselves as Teds. Teds have a striking visual presence; stereotypically black drape jackets, drain pipe trousers, brothel creepers and a quiff for the men; hobble skirts, fitted jackets, stilettos and red lipstick for the women. But no rules are concrete, and each individual navigates within this culture to their particular needs. But they are recognizable nonetheless.
I have made portraits that separate Ted members from the recognizable representations we are all familiar with. I wanted these portraits to be less about posing and more about their dedication to being a Ted. To do this, I photographed them in their homes, away from the crowd. I let their bodies tell their story, rather than the usual dress code. The part of the story I’ve shown is one of dedication to a culture that has given enjoyment and a sense of belonging in a world that is constantly changing the rules.
The title of this series is taken from a song by 1950 s American rock n roller, Chuck Berry. I think it perfectly describes the people of these portraits. Ted culture originated in the 1950s but still exists today. The friends I have photographed here, despite the aging process, have managed to keep their inner-teenager alive, largely through their membership to Ted Culture. In that way, they are Almost Grown.
